Landscaping and Hardscaping to Enhance Public Space
As part of the project to replace seven bridges over Interstate 676, PennDOT is investing in improvements to the surface streets and public areas above the interstate. These enhancements include landscaping and hardscaping of public space at the two pedestrian bridges, along Winter Street and elsewhere within the work area; new sidewalks; and shortened cross-walks at the sprawling intersection of 20th Street and the Parkway. Go here for a look at coming improvements to public space along Winter Street at the Parkway.
The graphic above shows the entire Part 1 project area. Click on the thumbnail renderings below for details about coming improvements to specific areas.
Pennypacker Monument Area – Northeast Corner of Logan Square
In addition to replacing the pedestrian bridge linking Logan Circle with Vine Street at the former Family Court Building, PennDOT will landscape and hardscape the public space at the Pennypacker Monument area of Logan Square with paver blocks, a variety of trees and shrubs and new benches. The Pennypacker statue will be cleaned and refurbished. Planter boxes will line new sidewalks that will be constructed along Vine Street on the north side of Logan Square.
Shakespeare Park – Northwest Corner of Logan Square
In addition to replacing the pedestrian bridge linking Logan Square with Vine Street at the Philadelphia Free Library, PennDOT will expand Shakespeare Park by covering the now-open area at the west side of the park. The entire Park will then be hardscaped with paver blocks to create an amphitheater, and landscaped with a variety of hearty trees and shrubs. New park benches will be installed. The Shakespeare statue will be cleaned and refurbished. Planter boxes will line new sidewalks that will be constructed along Vine Street on the north side of Logan Square.
Winter Street – North Side of Franklin Institute
Winter Street along the side of the Franklin Institute will be realigned to create a perpendicular intersection with the Parkway’s outer lanes. This realignment will create a plaza along the side of the institute that is hard-scaped with paver blocks and landscaped with a variety of trees. Park benches will be installed to create a comfortable gathering spot at the corner of Winter Street and the Parkway, and along the Parkway’s outer drive between the Parkway and 21st Street. See a before and after image of improvements along Winter Street at the Parkway.
